British Minister: Committed to defending Gulf states and Israel has not asked us to intervene

The British Minister of State for the Middle East asserted the UK's commitment to defend Gulf nations, highlighting that Israel has not requested military intervention.

Hamish Falconer, the British Minister of State for the Middle East, revealed that the UK has received requests for defensive support from several Gulf countries, emphasizing its role in safeguarding its allies in the region. He clarified that while the UK is focused on providing military assistance to Gulf allies, it has not received any requests for military intervention from Israel. This distinction underlines the UK’s strategic position in regional defense, particularly amid heightened tensions involving Iran.

Falconer spoke on Al Jazeera’s "Masa'iya" program, outlining the UK government’s defensive stance regarding the current conflict with Iran. He stated that the UK is committed to protecting its allies from missile attacks and maintaining regional stability. Falconer’s comments reflect the UK’s cautious approach, emphasizing defense commitments without escalating military involvement in broader regional disputes.

Additionally, he mentioned that, in line with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s statements in Parliament, the UK government has allowed the United States to use its military bases, including Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, not for offensive actions against Iran but rather to protect British citizens and allies in the Gulf. This further underscores the UK’s defensive posture while contributing to collective security efforts in a tumultuous geopolitical climate.
