On March 1, 2021, the city of Pakrac in Croatia witnessed solemn commemorations marking the 35th anniversary of the beginning of the Homeland War. This event commemorated the first open armed conflict that erupted when Serbian forces seized the Pakrac Police Station in the early hours of March 2, 1991. Croatian Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Tomo Medved, emphasized that during this pivotal moment, there was a concerted effort to dismantle Croatia's constitutional order and prevent the Croatian population from achieving independence. He stated that this attempt was decisively repelled by the Croatian police forces, leading to the foundation of the Croatian army soon after.
