Drug dealers transform cemetery into 'crack point' and use graves as drug storage in MG

A cemetery in Prata, Brazil, has been used by drug traffickers as a distribution point and storage for narcotics since 2025, leading to multiple arrests.

The Municipal Cemetery of Prata in the Triângulo Mineiro region has increasingly been exploited by criminals as a drug trafficking hub since 2025. Reports from the Military Police (PM) indicate that last year alone, there were five recorded incidents of drug trafficking within the cemetery, resulting in four arrests. On Sunday, a specific incident saw an individual retrieving narcotics from one of the graves, which has raised concerns about the extent of illicit activities within this unusual location.

According to Cabo André Felipe Carvalho of the PM, drug trafficking primarily occurs near the cemetery's perimeter, while the interior serves as a drug storage area. It has been discovered that the mausoleums and grave structures are being used by traffickers to conceal substantial amounts of narcotics, from which smaller quantities can be removed for sale outside. This operational method helps traffickers mitigate risks; if apprehended, they can still retain significant stockpiles hidden within the graves.

The situation illustrates a troubling trend where traditional sanctuaries like cemeteries are being repurposed for illicit activities, raising serious public safety concerns. The local community and authorities are now faced with the challenge of addressing this unique form of urban crime, which not only disrupts the peace in these resting places but also complicates law enforcement efforts to restore order within the community.
