Sesapi begins cataract campaign with over 7,000 surgeries; see schedule

The Piauí Health Department has launched a cataract initiative aimed at performing over 7,000 surgeries to improve residents' quality of life.

The Piauí Health Department (Sesapi) has officially launched the Cataract Project 2026 to tackle the backlog of cataract surgeries in the state. This initiative aims to conduct a total of 8,863 consultations and 7,087 surgeries across various municipalities, significantly enhancing the access of patients to essential medical treatments. By reducing the waiting time for these procedures, the program seeks to restore the quality of life for many residents, especially the elderly and working individuals affected by cataracts.

Rafael Alencar, the superintendent of Medium and High Complexity at Sesapi, emphasized the importance of this initiative in ensuring swift access to treatment for patients. Cataracts can lead to significant health limitations, especially for older adults, which is why timely intervention is critical. The program not only aims to carry out the necessary operations but also to educate patients on how to navigate their healthcare systems effectively, encouraging them to seek support through their local primary health services.

Patients interested in participating in the cataract campaign must initiate the process through their municipality's Primary Care by requesting a referral at a Basic Health Unit (UBS). Ultimately, the structured flow of the project is designed in two consecutive steps to ensure precise diagnosis and safe treatment procedure. This comprehensive approach showcases the state’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services for its citizens, demonstrating a proactive stance against preventable health issues such as cataracts.
