Avian influenza, or bird flu, is an infectious disease caused by a virus that primarily affects birds. Depending on the virus subtype, it can cause mild to severe illness, spreading rapidly and resulting in high mortality rates, especially with subtypes H5 and H7. Although most of these viruses do not infect humans, some variants, like H5N1, can be transmitted to people, posing a health risk. Recently confirmed cases of avian influenza in Buenos Aires provinces such as General Madariaga, Ranchos, and Lobos, as well as in Buenos Aires City, have highlighted the need for awareness of symptoms and preventive measures. According to the Pan American Health Organization, the symptoms of avian influenza can vary based on the severity of the clinical picture, but the most common symptoms include fever, cough, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. In rarer cases, more severe symptoms can occur, underscoring the importance of monitoring any such occurrences to mitigate health risks associated with this disease.
