Discrimination Board: NFI discriminated against applicants

A significant decrease in viewership for a recent event is linked to competitive programming and major news developments.

The Norwegian Discrimination Board reported that the National Film Institute (NFI) discriminated against applicants in its recent decisions. There has been a noticeable decline of 228,000 viewers from the previous year, bringing the market share down to 56.4%. The total viewership during the event was 865,000, a figure that reflects strong interest despite a challenging news landscape.

The low viewership may partly be attributed to strong competition from TV 2, which premiered the seventh season of a popular show called 'Kompani Lauritzen' at the same time as the broadcast. Additionally, a dramatic escalation of conflict in the Middle East on Saturday likely shifted viewers' focus away from the entertainment program. However, project manager Mads Tørklep highlighted that the event still garnered nearly 900,000 viewers, indicating a considerable level of interest despite competing events and pressing news around the globe.

Social media and online platforms also showed robust engagement, with around 870,000 interactions recorded on NRK's TikTok account related to the event. The winner of the MGP final was Jonas Lovv with the song "Ya ya ya," positioning him as Norway's representative for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, showcasing not only the event's cultural significance but also its impact on contemporary music representation in Europe.
