Car manufacturers near Galanta will employ only dozens from Samsung, others will have to look for jobs elsewhere

Car manufacturers in Slovakia are offering jobs to only a small number of Samsung employees affected by the closure of production, leaving many to seek employment elsewhere.

The shutdown of the Samsung television production facility in Galanta is set to result in job losses for approximately 750 permanent and around 200 agency workers. The potential impact extends beyond direct employment, as hundreds more in the supply chain could be affected by this downsizing. While car manufacturers located in Trnava and Nitra have expressed willingness to absorb a portion of these workers, they only anticipate creating a fraction of the jobs needed to accommodate the full scale of the layoffs.

Specifically, the Slovak automotive industry near Galanta is prepared to offer roles to some of the displaced Samsung workers, with a theoretical capacity for dozens of new hires at the Trnava plant. The situation is somewhat more promising at the Jaguar Land Rover facility in Nitra, which is in a phase of expansion and is expected to generate more new positions. However, none of these automotive employers can provide sufficient job opportunities to mitigate the overall job loss resulting from the Samsung closure, meaning laid-off workers will still face significant challenges in finding new employment.

Both the Slovak government's Ministers of Labour and Economy have been involved in addressing the situation, announcing interest from Stellantis and Jaguar Land Rover in hiring the affected Samsung employees. However, despite this interest, the scale of hiring that automotive companies can realistically provide remains limited, highlighting the need for broader employment strategies and support for those impacted by industrial shifts in the region.
