The body of an Iberian lynx hit by a vehicle is found in San Fernando de Henares
The body of an Iberian lynx, believed to have been hit by a car, has been discovered by the Civil Guard in San Fernando de Henares.
The Civil Guard has located the body of an Iberian lynx in a ditch along the M-203 road near San Fernando de Henares, showing injuries consistent with a possible vehicle collision, which is currently under investigation. A private individual had alerted the Civil Guard about the presence of the lynx's body last Friday, leading to the deployment of agents from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) to the scene.
Upon arrival, the agents carried out a thorough inspection and documented the scene before moving the lynx's body under custody to the Wild Animal Recovery Center (CRAS) of the Community of Madrid for further analysis. Preliminary examinations revealed various traumas and injuries that align with those typically caused by a car accident. It was noted that the lynx had a microchip, indicating it had traveled to San Fernando de Henares from the Valencian Community.
The incident highlights a concerning issue regarding wildlife safety and the impact of vehicle traffic on endangered species like the Iberian lynx. As the investigation unfolds, it raises awareness of the need for effective measures to protect such animals in areas where their natural habitats intersect with roadways, a task that local environmental authorities may need to prioritize to prevent future occurrences.
