Failed asylum seekers' flight to Amsterdam: three Sudanese citizens returned to Latvia

Three Sudanese asylum seekers attempting to fly to Amsterdam without valid documents were intercepted by Lithuanian border guards and returned to Latvia.

On Sunday morning, officers from the Vilnius Border Guard Unit conducted checks at the capital's airport and found three foreign nationals waiting for a flight to the Netherlands. These individuals, young men aged between 20 and 29 from Sudan, presented certificates issued by the Latvian Foreigners Registration Center, which allowed them entry into Latvia but did not permit travel to other Schengen countries like the Netherlands.

The situation escalated as it was revealed that the men arrived in Latvia illegally and had absconded from Latvian accommodation facilities for asylum seekers. Typically, passengers on internal EU flights are not checked, but the border guards implemented selective checks based on profiling criteria. This led to the interception of the migrants before they could board their flight.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges around illegal migration and asylum processes in the Baltic region, raising concerns about the adequacy of current systems to prevent unauthorized travel. As authorities intensify their border control measures, such occurrences may highlight the complexities and risks involved in seeking asylum and the journeys many undertake in search of safety.
