Tarien: Russia could not do what the USA is currently doing in Iran
A former Estonian Air Force chief states that Russia lacked the capability to conduct air operations in Ukraine like those recently executed by the USA in Iran.
In a recent statement, retired Brigadier General Jaak Tarien, a former chief of the Estonian Air Force, discussed the disparity in military capabilities between Russia and the United States. He remarked that Russia aspired to conduct an air operation in Ukraine in 2022 similar to that which the United States and Israel have just executed in Iran. However, he pointed out that Russia did not possess the necessary capabilities at that time to effectively dismantle enemy air defenses and leadership swiftly.
Tarien emphasized that the Russian military may be observing the US campaign in Iran with a sense of longing, realizing that they failed to achieve similar objectives in Ukraine due to a lack of military efficiency and technological superiority. He noted that the rapid execution of the US military's operation showcased a level of professionalism and capability that Russia could not match, leading to significant implications for their strategic standing in the region.
This insight reflects broader concerns within the Estonian defense community regarding the ongoing capabilities of both NATO and Russian forces. Tarien's observations underline the readiness with which the US can carry out operations in uncertain environments, and this could affect how geopolitical tensions are navigated in the future, particularly as Estonia and its neighbors contend with the implications of Russian military posture in Eastern Europe.
