A comprehensive inter-ministerial meeting took place on Monday, prompted by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, to prepare for the upcoming fire season. The meeting involved relevant ministries, operational arms of Civil Protection, and representatives from the Armed Forces, Greek Police, and the Fire Department, aiming to coordinate comprehensive interdepartmental plans. The objective of the meeting was to develop integrated plans that would ensure timely execution of preventive measures before the fire season begins. These measures include training, field readiness exercises, cleaning operations in forest and peri-urban areas and archaeological sites, creating firebreak zones, and fostering collaborations between the Fire Department and Forestry Services. Following the meeting, Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis emphasized that preparing for the wildfire season is an ongoing and dynamic process that requires constant attention and adaptation. He underscored the importance of establishing clear and strict institutional frameworks to enhance Greece's readiness for potential wildfires and mitigate their impacts on communities and the environment.
