Better Network: Starlink is Supposed to Close Mobile Gaps for Deutsche Telekom
Deutsche Telekom plans to collaborate with SpaceX's Starlink to enhance mobile network coverage, especially in challenging areas of Europe, starting from 2028.
Deutsche Telekom has announced plans to partner with SpaceX's Starlink to improve mobile network coverage across Europe, including Germany. This decision, revealed during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, marks a significant shift as the company had previously ruled out such a collaboration. The initiative aims to provide reliable connectivity in regions where building traditional infrastructure is hampered by geographic or environmental constraints.
Abdu Mudesir, a board member responsible for products and technology at Deutsche Telekom, emphasized the necessity of ensuring connectivity even in difficult terrains. The company is now poised to strategically enhance its network through Satellite-to-Mobile connectivity, which will become operational primarily in 2028. This partnership is expected to particularly benefit remote or underserved areas where traditional telecom infrastructure is limited or challenging to implement.
By collaborating with Starlink, Deutsche Telekom joins T-Mobile in the U.S., which has already been working with the satellite service. The expansion to include ten countries in Europe reflects a broader strategy to tackle coverage gaps and improve service reliability, particularly in times of increased mobile data demand. This proactive approach by Deutsche Telekom not only positions the company as an innovator in the telecom space but also addresses growing concerns around digital accessibility in varied geographic regions.
