Horses running onto the road caused a mass accident in the Birštonas municipality
A car accident in Birštonas was triggered by horses on the road, leading to injuries and one horse's death.
In Birštonas municipality, a traffic accident occurred when horses ran onto the road, resulting in injuries to a passenger in one car and the death of one horse. Emergency services were notified about the herd of horses posing a threat to road safety just minutes before the accident, but responders were unable to reach the scene in time. At around 6:30 AM, a report was received about the collision, which involved multiple vehicles including a Citroen and a Nissan, resulting in both vehicles ending up in a roadside ditch.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the first horse that ran onto the road was struck by a Citroen Berlingo headed towards Vilnius, driven by a 27-year-old man. The impact caused the horse to collide with a Nissan X-Trail driven by a 61-year-old man. Another horse was also hit by a Volkswagen Sharan following the Nissan, driven by a 39-year-old man. Emergency responders arrived on the scene to manage the situation, but unfortunately, one of the horses succumbs to its injuries, highlighting the dangers posed by animals on roadways and the importance of timely emergency responses.
This incident raises questions about road safety and the response times of emergency services to unforeseen hazards such as animals on highways. The city will likely need to review the processes for reporting such hazards and improving response times, as well as consider measures to prevent livestock from roaming freely near busy roads, to ensure the safety of both motorists and animals in the future.
