Kristersson: Sweden in talks about French nuclear weapons

Sweden will participate in enhanced discussions with European NATO countries regarding France's nuclear weapons, according to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Sweden will engage in deeper conversations with NATO allies about France's nuclear capabilities. The discussions aim to explore how France's national nuclear arsenal could contribute to a clearer collective European deterrent, ensuring that no foreign power contemplates aggression against Sweden. This collaboration will include several other nations, such as Denmark, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, in light of existing partnerships France has with other nuclear powers, notably the United Kingdom.

The dialogue initiative has been prepared in consultation with the United States and within the NATO framework, emphasizing the importance of multilateral security arrangements among European nations. Kristersson reassured that Sweden's nuclear doctrine, established upon its accession to NATO, remains unchanged. It is based on the principle of full involvement in NATO planning processes concerning nuclear strategy while maintaining a policy against housing nuclear weapons on Swedish soil during peacetime.

This engagement with NATO reflects Sweden's strategic shift towards deeper defense cooperation in response to contemporary security challenges in Europe. By discussing France's nuclear capabilities and deterrence strategies, Sweden aims to bolster its own security framework as well as contribute to Europe's overall defense posture against potential threats from hostile nations.
