In a high-stakes playoff held in Shibuya, Tokyo, Tetsuro Itodani, an Eight-Dan shogi player, triumphed over Takuya Nagase, gaining the right to challenge reigning champion Sota Fujii in the upcoming 84th Meijin Tournament. This marks Itodani's first time in a Meijin challenge, making the event particularly significant for him.

Originating from Hiroshima City and a prodigy under the tutelage of renowned shogi player Nobuhiro Mori, Itodani has made a name for himself as a quick thinker in matches. Notably, he also earned the Ryuo title amidst his academic pursuits at Osaka University in 2014. Since last year, he has been balancing competition with administrative duties as an executive director of the Japan Shogi Association, showcasing his versatility within the world of shogi.
