South Africa: SABC Cash Crisis Sparks Fears of Collapse
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) faces financial collapse due to a significant drop in cash reserves and increased net losses, raising doubts about its future operations.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is experiencing a severe cash crisis, with its financial situation deteriorating significantly over the past year. According to its latest annual report for 2025, the broadcaster's cash reserves plummeted from R401 million to only R59 million, representing an alarming 85 percent decrease. In addition to this, the SABC reported a net loss of R253.3 million, which is 28 percent worse than its losses from the previous year. This dire financial state raises concerns about the broadcaster's ability to continue operating, as emphasized by the Auditor General who stated there is serious doubt regarding its operational viability without available loans or credit facilities.
