Uganda: Masaka High Court Rolls Out Justice for Her Training to Fast-Track SGBV Cases
The Masaka High Court has initiated training to improve the management of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence cases, aiming to expedite their resolution.
The Head of the Masaka High Court Circuit, Lady Justice Victoria Nakintu Katamba, has launched a training program called Justice for Her at the Masaka High Court. This initiative is designed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency in handling Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases within the district. The training brought together key participants, including judicial officers, court clerks, interpreters, and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system, emphasizing the collaborative effort to tackle SGBV issues more effectively.
Scheduled to precede the Justice for Her criminal session starting on March 9, 2026, the training aims to prepare attendees by equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to address the rising number of SGBV cases. Justice Katamba announced that there are 36 cases ready for hearing during the upcoming session and explained that each judge would be responsible for approximately 18 cases. This proactive approach highlights the court's commitment to reducing delays in the justice process and supporting victims of violence.
The training also reflects a larger trend in the legal community recognizing the importance of specialized training to confront SGBV effectively. As the court navigates these challenging cases, the engagement of various judicial stakeholders underscores the critical nature of collaboration in seeking justice and protecting the rights of individuals affected by these crimes. The structured format of the training and the intent to fast-track cases could mark a significant shift in how SGBV cases are managed in Masaka, ultimately aiming for improved outcomes for victims seeking justice.
