Ursula von der Leyen calls for de-escalation to prevent conflict expansion in the Middle East
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urgently called for de-escalation to prevent the expansion of the conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran in the Middle East.
On Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the immediate need to reduce tensions in the Middle East to avert further escalation of conflicts, particularly regarding the ongoing situation between the US and Israel and Iran. She condemned the 'irresponsible and uncritically evaluated attacks' carried out by Iran and its allies against sovereign territories, which have recently included attacks on a British air force base in Cyprus and oil processing facilities in Saudi Arabia. Von der Leyen stated to reporters in Brussels that maintaining regional stability is of utmost importance.
During her comments, von der Leyen expressed deep concern over the current volatility in the region, mentioning that she had consulted with nine Middle Eastern leaders over the weekend before leading a crisis meeting with the European Commission on Monday. She underscored the troubling developments, indicating that they are 'very alarming' and declared that it is essential to work diligently towards reducing tensions and stopping the spread of the conflict. Her remarks underscore the European Union's role in seeking stability in the region amidst escalating tensions.
Von der Leyen also reiterated that the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could signify a 'new hope' for the oppressed people of Iran, hinting at the broader implications such developments could have on the political landscape in the Middle East. The call for de-escalation and the urgency conveyed by von der Leyen reflect the EU's perspective on the need for diplomatic engagement in the face of rising aggressions and unrest in the region.
