Žalgiris youth program manager on the situation in Abu Dhabi: 'Life here goes on without panic'
A manager from the Žalgiris youth program discusses the calm response of the team amidst regional tensions in Abu Dhabi.
Andrius Gopenas, the manager of the Žalgiris youth program, shared insights on the current situation in Abu Dhabi where the team is participating in a tournament. He recounted how he first learned of regional tensions during halftime of a game against the London Lions, when organizers of the Euroleague reassured him that there was no need to panic as the situation had not affected the United Arab Emirates. Gopenas decided not to pass this information to the players immediately, allowing them to maintain focus on the matches.
Following their Saturday morning match, the Žalgiris team returned to their hotel. As the competitive atmosphere intensified, especially with other teams like AS Monaco and Thessaloniki's Aris getting ready to compete, the tournament organizers convened a meeting with team representatives. It was during this meeting that the team 'NextGen Abu Dhabi' opted to withdraw from the tournament due to the escalating situation in the region, showcasing the gravity of the circumstances.
Gopenas emphasized that despite the surrounding tensions, life within the event carried on without visible panic. His approach resonates with a sense of professionalism and calmness amidst challenges, reflecting both on the youth program’s resilience and the broader context of sporting events in turbulent times. This incident reveals not only the challenges faced by young athletes in such environments but also the critical decisions made by team management during crises, highlighting the balancing act between competitive obligations and safety concerns.
