An impactful and enigmatic image of the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas was captured

The European Space Agency's Juice mission captured a striking image of the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas expelling dust and gas.

The scientific camera of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) from the European Space Agency (ESA) has captured a remarkable image depicting the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas emitting dust and gas. The comet's small nucleus, which is not visible in the image, is surrounded by a brilliant halo of gas known as the coma. A long tail extends from the comet, and indications of rays, jets, streams, and filaments can be observed, as reported by the ESA.

The inset of the image demonstrates the same data processed to enhance the structure of the coma. Arrows in the upper left corner indicate the comet's direction (blue) and its relative direction to the Sun (yellow). Although 3I/Atlas is a visitor from interstellar space, originating from outside the Solar System, its behavior aligns perfectly with that of a typical comet. The camera, referred to as JANUS, took this image on November 6, 2025, just seven days after the comet's most significant encounter.
