Pope Leo XIV appoints the new archbishop of Aparecida, SP
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Dom Mário Antonio da Silva as the new archbishop of Aparecida, Brazil, succeeding Dom Orlando Brandes.
On Monday, Pope Leo XIV officially announced the appointment of Dom Mário Antonio da Silva as the new archbishop of the Archdiocese of Aparecida, São Paulo. Previously serving as the archbishop of Cuiabá, Dom Mário is set to take over from Dom Orlando Brandes, who has led the archdiocese for a decade. This appointment holds significance as the Archdiocese of Aparecida is home to the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida, which is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Brazil.
Mário Antonio da Silva was born on October 17, 1966, in Itararé, São Paulo, in a devoted Catholic family, which helped foster his religious vocation from a young age. He began his theological studies at the Major Seminary Divine Master in the Diocese of Jacarezinho, Paraná, where he dedicated himself to understanding and practicing theology and moral teachings. His academic achievements include a master's degree in Moral Theology from the Pontifical University.
The transition to the new leadership comes at a pivotal time for the Archdiocese, particularly with Dom Orlando Brandes reaching the age of 80 in 2026, which marks a significant retirement milestone for clerics in the Catholic Church. The appointment of Dom Mário is expected to bring renewed energy and focus to the archdiocese's initiatives and community engagement efforts, especially around the Sanctuary, which plays a central role in the spiritual life of many Brazilians.
