A Major Attack on an Oil Tanker Near the Coast of Oman, One Indian Killed

An attack on the oil tanker 'MKD VYOM' off the coast of Oman resulted in the death of an Indian crew member amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran.

In a significant act of maritime violence linked to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, an oil tanker named 'MKD VYOM,' flagged by the Marshall Islands, came under attack approximately 52 nautical miles off the coast of Muscat in Oman. The incident involved an unmanned vessel that struck the tanker, causing a fire to erupt in the main engine room and leading to an explosion.

Tragically, the attack resulted in the death of one Indian crew member aboard the tanker, which was carrying a cargo of around 59,463 metric tons and had a total of 21 crew members on board, including 16 Indians, 4 Bangladeshis, and 1 Ukrainian. Following the incident, an immediate evacuation effort was coordinated by the Maritime Security Center to ensure the safety of the crew members.

A Panamanian-flagged merchant vessel, 'MV SAND,' played a crucial role in rescuing all 21 crew members safely. The Royal Navy of Oman is currently monitoring the damaged tanker and the surrounding maritime area, which poses a significant concern for other vessels transiting through this region, indicating a potential escalation in maritime security issues in response to geopolitical tensions.
