Janika Lõiv received third place at the season opener in Spain
Janika Lõiv won third place in an international mountain biking competition in Spain, Gran Premio Zaragoza.
Janika Lõiv, the reigning national champion of Estonia, achieved a commendable third place in the Gran Premio Zaragoza, an international Olympic cross competition held in Spain. The event, classified as UCI C1, showcased elite female competitors, where Dutch cyclist Anne Terpstra emerged victorious, completing the race in 1:24.24. Spanish rider Estibaliz Sagardoy Zunzarren sprinted to second place, leaving Lõiv to take bronze.
After the race, Lõiv expressed that she started her season preparations later than usual, and as a result, she feels quite far from her optimal competition form. Despite this, she felt motivated to participate in the Zaragoza event, although she mentioned starting too conservatively for fear of not finishing strong. Throughout much of the race, she occupied the third position, fighting through physical discomfort as she adjusted to the intensity of competition after her late start into the season.
Lõiv's performance, despite being below her usual standard, highlights her determination and willingness to compete. The experience will likely serve as valuable preparation for future races as she aims to regain her competitive edge. Competing at a high level is crucial for her as she seeks to improve and maintain her position among international peers in the sport of mountain biking.
