Cyprus: 2 Drones Intercepted Heading Towards British Bases in Akrotiri β Greece Sends 2 Frigates and F-16s
Two drones heading towards the British bases in Akrotiri were intercepted, with Greece sending military support to Cyprus in response to rising tensions.
Cypriot government spokesman Costas Lettymbiotis announced that two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) approaching the British bases in Akrotiri were successfully intercepted. Sirens rang out again in Akrotiri, raising security concerns, and alarm signals were triggered at Paphos airport, indicating a heightened state of alert in the region. This development highlights increasing tensions related to aerial security in the area, particularly concerning British military installations.
In response to the emerging threats, Greek National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that Greece would bolster Cypriot security by deploying a robust military presence to the island. Dendias assured that after recent unprovoked attacks, Greece will continuously assist in Cyprus's defense throughout the crisis. His remarks followed a meeting at the Ministry of National Defense, where he discussed defense strategies with international counterparts, including Cypriot President Christodoulides.
The Greek government has decided to send the frigate Kimon along with another Greek frigate to ensure the safety of Cypriot airspace and reinforce defensive measures. This military mobilization underscores the strategic partnership between Greece and Cyprus, particularly in light of perceived threats from external forces. The deployment of F-16 fighter jets signifies a serious commitment to regional security and a coordinated response to an increasingly volatile situation.
