Park Hong-geun of the Fourth-Term Senior Figures: 'Stability'... The Selection of Park Yong-jin as a Message of 'Unity'
President Lee Jae-myung's nomination of Park Hong-geun as the minister candidate for the Ministry of Strategy and Finance reflects an aim to enhance governance speed in the second year of his presidency, emphasizing both practicality and stability.
On February 2, President Lee Jae-myung nominated Park Hong-geun, a senior member of the Democratic Party and a four-term lawmaker, for the position of Minister of Strategy and Finance. This move is perceived as an effort to accelerate governance in the second year of the presidency by prioritizing practical strategies and stability. In conjunction, former lawmaker Park Yong-jin was appointed as the co-chairman of the Regulatory Improvement Committee at the ministerial level, signaling a commitment to internal party unity.
According to Lee Kyoo-yeon, the chief public relations officer at the Blue House, the primary reason for nominating Park was his expertise. Park has long been recognized as a leading specialist in policy and budget within the Democratic Party, having served on the National Assembly's Committee on Finance and Economy, as well as holding key positions such as chairman and secretary of the Special Committee on Budget Settlement. His experience includes coordination of budget preparation, execution, and settlement processes. Notably, he also played a critical role in the transition committee of President Lee's administration, taking charge of drafting the groundwork for the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
Through the appointment of a capable senior lawmaker like Park, President Lee aims to expedite the preparation of the "Lee Jae-myung budget" for the following year while solidifying his organizational control. Comments from several lawmakers indicate that the choice of Park, a seasoned politician, is intended to stabilize the ministry and ensure it stands its ground against the Ministry of Economy and Finance. There is speculation that this appointment also considers the recent resignation of former lawmaker Lee Hye-hoon, as another failure to pass a ministerial appointment could pose a significant challenge for the administration.
