“First Step Towards the Normalization of Truth and Reconciliation”… Expectations for the Appointment of Song Sang-kyo as Chairperson of the 3rd Committee
President Lee Jae-myung appointed former Director Song Sang-kyo as the chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), marking a significant step towards the normalization of the commission just days after its third installment began.
On October 2, President Lee Jae-myung appointed Song Sang-kyo as the chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, signaling a notable advancement towards the normalization of the commission shortly after its establishment. The timing of the appointment, just five days into the third round of the TRC, indicates a strategic move to address the challenges faced by the agency in previous terms.
Song Sang-kyo, who previously served as the head of the TRC's secretariat for over five years during the second committee, is viewed by many as a key figure in reforming the agency. Despite facing controversies for his comments on sensitive historical issues during his tenure, including reactions to the '5.18 North Korean army intervention theory', his leadership is now seen as essential in ensuring continuity and integrity in the TRC's mission. His previous resignation attempt in protest against the appointment of a questionable leader underscores the internal struggles and dedication to justice within the commission.
Both the 4.9 Unification Peace Foundation and the Catholic Human Rights Commission welcomed Song’s appointment, expressing relief that his leadership could help sustain the commission's efforts in reconciling past injustices. However, they cautioned against filling the committee with individuals lacking merit, emphasizing the necessity of learning from historical lessons. This caution hints at the ongoing challenges faced by the TRC in fulfilling its mandate effectively and impartially, amidst political pressures and public scrutiny.
