‘Kim Jin-tae's Re-election Campaign vs Government Communication’... Controversy Over Gangwon Province Report Meeting
The Gangwon provincial government is facing criticism for hosting a report meeting that some view as a campaign event for Governor Kim Jin-tae's re-election.
Ahead of the June local elections, the Gangwon provincial government has organized a report meeting, which is now a source of controversy. The Democratic Party of Korea's Gangwon branch criticized the event, stating that while it was officially positioned as a platform for governmental communication, it was effectively a campaign launch for Governor Kim Jin-tae's re-election. Concerns have been raised that the meeting emphasized support and praise for Kim rather than serious policy discussions or engagement with the citizens.
Democratic Party official Kim Do-kyun expressed that using public authority and resources for a personal political campaign during this event raises fairness issues, and it is inappropriate for a public gathering funded by taxpayers to be perceived as a platform for accumulating political capital. This sentiment was echoed by other party representatives, who described the event as transforming into a political rally rather than a legitimate governmental meeting.
In response, the Justice Party's Gangwon branch issued a statement questioning whether the meeting complied with election laws, particularly noting the participation of National Assembly member Han Gi-ho, who appeared to support the governor in a way deemed inappropriate for a formal governmental meeting. The Gangwon province emphasized that the report meeting is intended to discuss key provincial issues and receive feedback from citizens, with similar events planned across different regions.
