Nigeria: Travellers Miss Flights As FAAN's Cashless Payment Starts At Lagos Airport Toll Gate, Paralyses Vehicular Traffic

Many travelers missed their flights at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport due to traffic caused by the new cashless payment system at the toll gate.

The recent implementation of a cashless payment system at the toll gate of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos led to significant congestion as numerous travelers were unable to access the airport in a timely manner. Many of the travelers, unfamiliar with the new system, had not acquired the required access cards and thus faced delays when the officials rejected cash payments. This resulted in long lines and frustration as commuters attempted to find alternative means of payment through POS systems, further complicating the situation. The traffic snarls began forming early in the day, around 7 and 8 Bus Stop along airport roads, crippling vehicular movement leading up to the airport. The scenario created a cascading effect as vehicles waited intensely in a logjam that stretched back to notable locations like the Mobile Filling Station, affecting not just airport users but also local commuters. This disruption led to many passengers missing their domestic flights, highlighting the initial shortcomings in the rollout of the cashless payment initiative. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had previously announced the transition to a cashless policy and set a timeline for its implementation. However, as this rollout shows, there was inadequate preparation for the operational challenges that would accompany such a significant change. Moving forward, feedback from this incident could prompt better planning and clearer communication to ensure smoother transitions for the travelling public in future cash management systems at airports.
