Aarhus officially removes Eskimovej from the city map

The street Eskimovej in Aarhus is officially renamed to Silavej, reflecting a shift towards more culturally sensitive terminology.

The city of Aarhus has officially decided to change the name of Eskimovej to Silavej, following a request from Det Grønlandske Hus and the Greenlandic student association Avalak. The term 'eskimo' has been deemed outdated and potentially derogatory, prompting the need for a more respectful name. The new name, Silavej, corresponds to terms that convey neutrality and positivity in Greenlandic, representing meanings such as weather, world, and mindset.

Marie Annelise Kahlig, director of Det Grønlandske Hus in Aarhus, emphasized the importance of street names in reflecting societal values and perceptions. She stated that even a street name can send a strong message about how communities view one another and what they stand for. This renaming is part of a broader trend towards recognizing and respecting cultural sensitivities, particularly in light of the historical contexts associated with certain terms.

The municipality has planned to install new street signs with the name Silavej during the morning hours, marking a formal transition in the public enumeration of the city. This renaming reflects a growing awareness and responsiveness to calls for change from indigenous communities and highlights the ongoing discussions about language and cultural representation within Denmark.
