Cell Phone Ban Transforms Recess - Ristijärvi School Students Now Repairing Broken Devices of Residents

Ristijärven keskuskoulu has banned mobile phones throughout the school day, encouraging students to repair broken devices during recess.

The Ristijärvi Central School in Finland has implemented a complete ban on mobile phone usage during school hours, prompting a creative initiative among students during recess. Instead of being passively engaged in social media, students are now participating in hands-on activities by repairing broken devices brought in by local residents. This innovative approach is aimed at fostering active engagement and learning among students in a more practical environment.

With various items, such as outboard motors, riding lawnmowers, and scooters, students are actively learning technical skills while also contributing to their community. The equipment has been collected after the school issued a call on social media for residents to donate items in need of repair. Lauri Lappalainen, the principal of Ristijärvi Central School, emphasizes the importance of keeping students engaged in constructive activities rather than letting them become passive during breaks.

The initiative has been well-received, with an overwhelming response from the community, providing more items than the school can currently handle. Some projects, like repairing two drones, have been deferred to the future due to the volume of donations. The Finnish National Agency for Education also supports schools in adopting broader mobile device bans, advocating for more active engagement among students during school hours.
