Nigeria: NECA, FRCN Deepen Collaboration On Corporate Transparency and Sustainability Reporting

The Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association and the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria are collaborating to enhance corporate transparency and sustainability reporting.

The Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) recently engaged in a strategic meeting with the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) in Lagos, aimed at fostering collaboration on issues of corporate reporting and sustainability. This partnership is significant as it addresses the pressing need for improved transparency within the business environment, especially amidst growing concerns regarding corporate governance in Nigeria. The engagement marks a concerted effort to develop frameworks that will guide businesses in maintaining accountability and sustainability in their operations.

During the meeting, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, Chairman of FRCN, underscored the Council's initiative to provide capacity-building programmes specifically targeting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These programmes are designed to empower smaller businesses to fulfill the necessary financial reporting standards, thereby enhancing their ability to participate effectively in the economy. This support is crucial for the sustainability of SMEs, which form a significant part of Nigeria's economic landscape and employment sector.

Moreover, the FRCN is set to introduce a mandatory Sustainability Reporting framework, for which Dr. Olowo announced a structured readiness programme aimed at preparing the private sector for its implementation. The initiative is expected to promote a culture of sustainability among businesses and ensure they are equipped to adhere to the impending regulatory changes. This proactive approach signifies a step forward in Nigeria's corporate governance landscape, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in business practices.
