Finnish sports legend receiving an 80,000 euro honor – 'I was very surprised'
A bronze statue is being erected in honor of Finnish sports legend Heikki Ikola, with plans for installation at the Jurva biathlon stadium next fall.
In a significant tribute to Finnish sports icon Heikki Ikola, plans are underway to erect a bronze statue at the Jurva biathlon stadium, with a funding goal of 80,000 euros. The initiative is a collaborative effort by the Jurva Rotary Club and Jurva Sport, led by Reima Mänty and supported by local figure Erkki Tsupukka. Sculptor Seppo Kalliokoski has already created a miniature model of the statue, marking the commencement of this exciting project.
The funding to cover the costs of the statue will largely come from sponsorships, for which the organizers are currently seeking approval. Additionally, the municipal vitality board of Kurikka has already contributed 10,000 euros towards the cost, indicating strong community support for the endeavor. Tsupukka emphasized Ikola's deserving nature for such an honor, framing the statue as a celebration of Ikola's legendary status and his substantial contributions to Finnish sports.
The location at the Jurva biathlon stadium is deemed particularly appropriate, as it will prominently position the statue in a place of historical significance—the first biathlon stadium in Finland. This initiative not only highlights the legacy of Heikki Ikola but also fosters a sense of pride and recognition within the local community for its sports achievements, aiming to inspire future generations of athletes.
