Police report an increase in car thefts by seven percent this February compared to last year, highlighting broader criminal activity trends.

The police have announced a seven percent increase in car thefts this February compared to the previous year, reflective of a troubling rise in overall criminal activities. Insurance company Lähitapiola has issued a statement urging vehicle owners to be aware of the risks and nuances of coverage for thefts. They indicated that not all damages incurred during a theft incident are covered under the same insurance policy, which adds an extra layer of complexity for the victims.

In their analysis, Lähitapiola emphasized the significant difference between the car itself and the contents within it in terms of insurance coverage. For example, damages or theft of the vehicle's structure or fixed equipment generally fall under comprehensive or collision insurance, whereas personal items stolen from the vehicle might not be covered. This distinction is critical for car owners to understand when filing claims.

Antti Määttänen, the claims director for Lähitapiola in the Pirkanmaa region, provided a typical case where a car was broken into through a smashed side window, resulting in all easily detachable items being stolen. He explained that while the side window would be covered by insurance, victims must often navigate the complexities of what is included in their coverage to ensure they are fully compensated for their losses.
