‘The Butcher from Suntar’ Suspected of New Double Murder

Russian serial killer Viktor Savvinov has been arrested for suspected new murders after his previous release from prison.

Viktor Savvinov, a 38-year-old Russian serial killer, has been apprehended again for allegedly committing a double murder in Yakutsk. Previously sentenced to eleven years in prison for murdering a woman in 2020, he was released in 2023 after signing a contract with the Russian military to fight in Ukraine. Following his return to Russia a year later, he was arrested and subsequently sentenced to twenty years for additional murders.

Reports indicate that in February 2024, Savvinov expressed grievances about not receiving enough respect during a public holiday in Russia called Defender of the Fatherland Day. He was intoxicated when he assaulted a friend with a crowbar before committing the murder of 64-year-old Valentina Fedorova. This incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the justice system in handling repeat offenders, particularly those with violent criminal backgrounds.

The case has garnered international attention due to the brutal nature of Savvinov's crimes and questions surrounding his repeated releases from incarceration. The implications of his actions not only contribute to the ongoing discourse about criminal justice in Russia but also highlight the complexities faced by authorities when rehabilitating offenders with severe histories of violence.
