Xiaomi lands at the MWC with the 17 Ultra, new tablets, and an increasingly complete ecosystem
Xiaomi debuted its latest smartphone series, the 17 Ultra, along with tablets and accessories, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona amid an industry crisis due to rising component costs.
The Mobile World Congress (MWC), the year's most significant event for the smartphone market, is set to take place in Barcelona this week, attracting over 100,000 visitors. This year's MWC carries added weight due to a crisis in the industry stemming from the increasing costs of components. According to Counterpoint Research, memory prices have surged between 80% and 90% in the first quarter of 2026, driven by demand from AI data centers. Gartner also predicts that smartphones could see a 13% increase in price this year, potentially leading to a significant drop in sales.
Despite these challenges, the MWC provides Xiaomi with an excellent platform to globally launch its ambitious 17 series smartphones, which have been available in China since December. The new devices are well-timed with the release of additional products, such as tablets, a smartwatch featuring Wear OS 6, and various accessories, expanding Xiaomi's ecosystem and enhancing its competitive edge in the market.
This launch is not only about presenting new products but also about Xiaomi's strategy to capitalize on the mobile market's recovery post-crisis. With the integration of Leica branding into their devices, Xiaomi aims to attract photography enthusiasts and position itself as a premium player in an increasingly competitive smartphone landscape. The company is leveraging the MWC to reinforce its presence in global markets while navigating the challenges posed by rising component costs and an uncertain sales environment.
