FIFA president calls for expulsion of players who cover their mouths during verbal disputes
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called for the expulsion of players who cover their mouths during verbal exchanges amid efforts to combat racism in football.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has proposed strict measures against players who cover their mouths during confrontations, stating that such actions should lead to expulsion. This stance was emphasized following allegations of discrimination involving Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior, who claimed he was subjected to derogatory remarks from Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni. Although Prestianni has denied the accusations, he has been suspended from the subsequent match against Real Madrid while investigations are ongoing.
During a recent meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), Infantino addressed the need for stringent regulations regarding this behavior. The British news agency PA Media reported his remarks, where he further explained his reasoning by stating that if a player is indeed making an inappropriate statement, they would cover their mouth to avoid being identified. He voiced a clear message: without the intent to hide something, there is no need to cover oneβs mouth.
Infantino's stance is part of a broader initiative by FIFA to combat racism within football, aiming to create a more transparent and fair environment for players and teams. His advocacy for strict disciplinary actions reflects a growing urgency to address issues of discrimination and to ensure that the sport is conducted without prejudice or malice. This call for action opens a discussion about the responsibilities of players and the role of governing bodies in enforcing ethical conduct in sports.
