Walrus Warning from the Police
The police in Kristiansund have issued a warning to the public to keep their distance from a walrus that has settled on a dock, following multiple reports of people trying to approach the animal.
A walrus has taken up residence on a dock at Rensvik marina in Kristiansund, prompting local police to restrict access to the area for safety reasons. Police have set up a cordon approximately 15 meters from the animal to prevent onlookers from getting too close and potentially causing dangerous situations. Operations leader Espen Andrésen in Møre og Romsdal police district has reported several instances throughout the day where individuals have approached the walrus for photos and interaction, leading to concerns for both public safety and the animal's well-being.
The police urge boat owners who are within the established safety perimeter to exercise caution and respect when accessing their vessels, emphasizing the need to avoid any close encounters with the walrus. They plan to monitor the situation as it develops throughout the evening, ensuring that the animal remains undisturbed while also protecting the public. This warning highlights the challenges of managing wildlife interactions in urban areas, where curiosity can lead to unsafe situations.
Earlier that same day, a walrus was reported to have appeared in a garden in Øygarden, near Bergen, showcasing the unusual movements of these large marine mammals and raising awareness of their presence in nearby coastal regions. The police's proactive approach aims to educate the public while safeguarding both the walrus and the community.
