New findings from scientists. This oil supports brain function
A recent study confirms that olive oil consumption can help preserve cognitive functions in older adults by influencing gut microbiota.
Olive oil, a staple of the Mediterranean diet admired for its health benefits, has shown promising effects on brain function according to recent research conducted by Spanish scientists. This study specifically shed light on the lesser-known impact of olive oil on cognitive performance, revealing mechanisms linked to gut microbiota.
The research, conducted by a team from Rovira i Virgili University in Spain, involved a prospective analysis of health data from 656 participants aged 55 to 75, all considered at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, many of whom were affected by overweight or obesity as well as metabolic syndrome. The findings indicate that regular consumption of olive oil contributes positively to cognitive functions, highlighting its significance beyond traditional heart health benefits.
This study represents the first comprehensive exploration of the relationship between olive oil, gut microbiota, and cognitive function in humans, providing critical insights into dietary influences on mental health. As global populations age, understanding such dietary effects could prove vital in managing cognitive decline and promoting healthier aging.
