Latvian souvenirs made from textile surplus

In Sigulda and Liepāja, workshops have developed about 20 modular ideas for creating souvenirs from textile waste, evaluated for market viability by students and experts.

Workshops in Sigulda and Liepāja, Latvia, have produced around 20 modular ideas for souvenirs crafted from textile surplus. At the Daugavpils Saules school, the first tangible prototypes were discussed, where participants tested functionality, combined materials, and assessed which solutions could be viable in the souvenir market. The initiative aims to repurpose items that would otherwise end up as waste, as highlighted by Dace Akule, a sustainable textile expert from the environmental organization 'Zaļā brīvība'.

The emphasis of the project is on practical and easily transportable objects, aligning with consumer preferences for small souvenirs often brought back from travels. Students highlighted the common trend of travelers bringing back small items, particularly T-shirts with city names, due to baggage size and weight restrictions. Three students from the Textiles department at Daugavpils Saules school reflected on these considerations, indicating their focus on creating items that are not only aesthetically appealing but also functional and manageable for travelers.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to find new value in discarded materials and prevent them from becoming trash. By exploring innovative uses for post-consumer and production waste, the project aligns with sustainable practices and the growing interest in eco-friendly products. This not only promotes environmental responsibility but also creates potential economic opportunities within the souvenir market in Latvia.
