Afghan losses near 1,000 in latest escalation – Pakistan

Pakistan claims Afghan forces have suffered nearly 1,000 casualties in recent border clashes involving Taliban fighters and airstrikes.

In a recent escalation of conflict near the Afghan-Pakistan border, Pakistani officials reported that Afghan forces have sustained nearly 1,000 casualties, including significant numbers of Taliban fighters. According to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, these losses were reported to include 415 deaths among Taliban and allied militants, along with over 580 wounded. The Pakistani military also claimed substantial damage to Afghan military infrastructure, stating that 182 checkpoints were destroyed alongside tanks and artillery in airstrikes targeting 46 different locations in Afghanistan.

The Afghan government, however, has not officially verified the figures released by Pakistan's officials. According to Hamdullah Fitrat, a spokesman for the Afghan government, the recent clashes resulted in 78 confirmed casualties on the Afghan side, which include 13 Afghan soldiers and 52 civilians, predominantly women and children. Moreover, he indicated that the conflict has also claimed the lives of 12 Pakistani soldiers, highlighting the cross-border nature of these hostilities and the impact on both nations.

This escalation adds tension to the already fraught relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan, particularly concerning border security and militant activities. With both governments providing differing accounts of the casualties and impacted areas, the conflict’s toll on civilians and soldiers raises concerns about regional stability and the humanitarian implications of ongoing warfare in the border regions of Khost, Paktika, Kunar, Nangarhar, and Kandahar, which have been identified as hotspots of violence and military operations.
