OPEC+ Raises Production Despite Tensions in Hormuz Threatening Global Oil Markets

OPEC+ is set to increase oil production by 206,000 barrels per day amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly related to conflicts involving the US and Iran.

OPEC+, led by key members Saudi Arabia and Russia, has decided to raise oil production by 206,000 barrels a day, a contrast to their previous decision to halt a series of increases in the first quarter. This decision comes in light of mounting tensions in the Middle East, where instability has escalated significantly. The new output significantly exceeds the previous monthly increases of 137,000 barrels a day set for the fourth quarter, and it coincides with the fallout from a regional conflict that included the death of Iran's highest leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which has threatened oil production and disrupted navigation through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a key export route for many OPEC+ members.
