VIDEO: Airplane with more than half a ton of cocaine seized by the Police after emergency landing in the interior of MA

The Maranhão State Military Police seized an airplane carrying approximately 515 kilograms of cocaine after an emergency landing in a farm in João Lisboa, Brazil.

The Maranhão State Military Police captured an aircraft carrying around 515 kilograms of cocaine on Saturday night after it made an emergency landing at a farm in the Jatobá community of João Lisboa, located in the southwest of the state. Two individuals were taken into custody in connection with this seizure, identified as Leonardo Gadiel Vasquez Arias and José Jesus Ardaya Jimenez. The police are currently investigating their nationalities, which may be Bolivian or otherwise.

According to the Maranhão Public Security Secretariat, the small aircraft, registered as PT-KRE, originated from Bolivia and was destined for São Luís. Witnesses reported that the plane took off from Trinidad in the Beni region of Bolivia, and the initial plan was to land in the Pinheiro region of Maranhão before proceeding with the illicit cargo. The recovered cocaine is estimated to be worth approximately R$ 26 million.

This incident highlights ongoing issues related to drug trafficking routes between Bolivia and Brazil, with Maranhão being a critical transit point for illicit substances. The authorities' swift action in intercepting this operation underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in curtailing drug smuggling activities in Brazil's expansive and often remote regions.
