Meloni gathers the ministers. The network with our allies
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni convenes an urgent meeting with key ministers to address escalating tensions in the Gulf region following missile strikes that affect Italian military personnel in Kuwait.
In response to ongoing military actions in the Gulf, including missile strikes that have hit a base in Kuwait where Italian soldiers are stationed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called an emergency meeting with her ministers. During this meeting, important figures including the foreign and defense ministers, as well as intelligence chiefs, discussed the alarming situation in Iran and surrounding areas. Officials report significant damage to the base, but fortunately, the 300 Italian soldiers present there are unharmed. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed the government’s readiness to facilitate the evacuation of Italian citizens in Iran if the situation deteriorates further.
The government appears to be taking a cautious approach regarding diplomacy, recognizing that the situation may not be conducive to negotiations just yet. However, Meloni’s administration is committed to maintaining communication with allies and regional leaders to explore efforts aimed at de-escalating the rising tensions. Throughout the day, Meloni is expected to engage in a series of calls with European leaders to align strategies and assert Italy's position on the matter.
Emphasizing support for the local civilian population, the Italian government has reiterated its solidarity with the Iranian citizens demanding their civil and political rights. Despite the tensions, there is no explicit condemnation of the military interventions as Rome balances its diplomatic stance while prioritizing the safety of its personnel abroad and maintaining regional alliances.
