Oktoberfest: More than 5000 Votes for New Oktoberfest Beer
Giesinger Brewery has gathered over 5000 signatures to push for a referendum allowing its beer at Oktoberfest starting in 2027.
A week after launching a citizen initiative, Giesinger Brewery reported collecting over 5,390 signatures aimed at forcing a referendum on the approval of their beer at the Oktoberfest by 2027. This initiative was made public by brewery chief Steffen Marx during the Starkbierfest, and they require around 40,000 signatures to proceed. A spokesperson mentioned that support spans across various political parties, highlighting the widespread interest in diversifying the beer offerings at this iconic event.
The citizen's vote poses a significant question, asking whether the city of Munich should allow Giesinger Brewery to serve its beer at the Oktoberfest starting in 2027. Currently, only six breweries are permitted to serve their beers at the festival: Augustiner, Hacker Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten. The introduction of another brewery’s beer would represent a major shift in Oktoberfest traditions, which have been closely adhered to for generations, and could alter the landscape of the festival.
The push for inclusion not only reflects Giesinger Brewery's aspiration to join this prestigious festival but also indicates a growing movement towards modernization and broader representation of local businesses within Munich's cultural and culinary events. If successful, this initiative could pave the way for further changes in how Oktoberfest and similar events are structured, challenging long-standing exclusivities in favor of inclusivity and regional diversity.
