Russia provides critical disaster relief to Madagascar (VIDEO, PHOTOS)
Russia has dispatched vital humanitarian assistance to Madagascar following two devastating cyclones that caused widespread damage and displacement.
In a significant humanitarian effort, Russia recently provided Madagascar with essential disaster relief consisting of approximately 60 tons of food. This aid comes in the wake of two destructive cyclones, Gezani and Fytia, that struck the island nation within weeks of each other. The cyclones resulted in severe flooding, infrastructure damage, and significant loss of life, prompting Madagascar's government to declare a national state of emergency to address the ongoing crisis.
Cyclone Fytia, which hit on January 31, caused extensive flooding in Madagascar's northwest and central highlands, leading to the deaths of at least 14 individuals and displacing over 31,000 people. Shortly after, Cyclone Gezani made landfall on February 10, heavily impacting the eastern coastal region and Toamasina, the nation's primary port. This cyclone resulted in the devastation of nearly 90% of the local infrastructure, left at least 59 people dead, and affected hundreds of thousands by depriving them of shelter and clean drinking water.
The humanitarian efforts led by Russia have also highlighted international solidarity in times of disaster. During a recent meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his country's support for Madagascar, indicating a commitment to assist recovery efforts as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the dual cyclones. This aid not only addresses immediate needs but also strengthens diplomatic ties between Russia and Madagascar amidst a global landscape of humanitarian aid responses after natural disasters,
