Ship from Russia's shadow fleet stopped by Belgium
Belgium's navy has intercepted a tanker belonging to Russia's shadow fleet, which is set to be detained in Zeebrugge.
Belgian authorities have seized a tanker identified as belonging to Russia's shadow fleet, which consists of vessels with often unclear ownership and poor condition. On Sunday, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced that, with assistance from the French military, the vessel named Ethera was boarded and is now being escorted to the port of Zeebrugge for confiscation. This action underscores Belgium's commitment to enforcing EU sanctions against Russian entities amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The shadow fleet, used by Russia to covertly export oil, poses significant risks not only due to its dubious operational standards but also because of potential environmental disasters should one of these vessels encounter mechanical failure or an accident. As these ships frequently lack proper insurance, the possibility of an oil spill or other ecological catastrophe raises serious concerns among European nations, prompting Belgium's decisive action.
Minister Francken emphasized that Belgium is taking its responsibilities seriously regarding international sanctions and will continue to target Russian ships involved in oil exports. This incident reflects broader European efforts to curtail Russia's economic activities and highlights the ongoing tension in the region as nations grapple with the repercussions of the conflict in Ukraine.
