Fathers to Help Other Fathers in New Pilot Project

A pilot project in Denmark encourages new fathers to seek support from volunteer father guides as they adjust to fatherhood.

In Denmark, a new initiative called the 'fædretræf-projekt' has been launched, aimed at providing support for first-time fathers through peer-to-peer guidance. This program is operational in several municipalities including Vordingborg, Norddjurs, Vejen, Odder, and Furesø, allowing new fathers to speak with experienced volunteer father guides who understand the challenges of becoming a parent. The initiative was introduced following the enactment of a law that allocated paternity leave specifically for fathers, addressing new needs for support during this transitional period in family life. The project is run by the Committee for Health Education and emphasizes the importance of relatable guidance. Mikkel Storm, a father guide from Furesø, commented on the value of having support from someone who has undergone similar experiences, as opposed to authority figures from municipalities. This creates an inclusive atmosphere where fathers can openly share their concerns and experiences while receiving support and advice from their peers. In 2026, after receiving an evaluation from the State Institute for Public Health, the program plans to expand its reach to an additional 20 municipalities, indicating a recognition of the need for such supportive structures in the parenting journey. This project not only aims to foster a sense of community among fathers but also highlights the evolving role of fathers in family dynamics, particularly in relation to shared parental responsibilities.
