Your smart car may cost you more than you expect after purchase
A report highlights the hidden costs associated with digital services in modern smart cars, emphasizing the importance of transparency in pricing.
As the auto industry undergoes rapid digital transformation, modern vehicles are evolving from mere modes of transportation into technology platforms connected to the internet. This development provides drivers with updated navigation systems, app-based vehicle control, and remote data access. However, it raises concerns regarding costs and transparency, particularly with respect to additional fees for digital services post-purchase.
The ADAC (German Automobile Club) has partnered with the tech magazine cāt to warn consumers about what they term 'non-transparent subsequent costs' associated with certain digital services in modern cars. Their joint analysis covered 16 automotive brands regarding their internet connection services. The findings revealed a mixed approach: while some companies include digital services in the vehicle's price, others offer complimentary features for a limited period, which then convert to paid subscriptions that can range from nominal monthly fees to several hundred euros annually.
Most of these services fall under the category of comfort, such as updates for navigation and infotainment systems, while others encompass both convenience and safety, including features like adaptive high-beam systems or emergency assistance. This situation underscores the importance for consumers to be aware of potential hidden costs when purchasing smart cars and to carefully consider what services they might have to pay for after the initial purchase.
