Fishing ban on trout and pike takes effect in Lithuania

Lithuania's Ministry of Environment has announced that fishing bans on trout and pike will be in effect until mid-May and the end of May respectively, along with other restrictions.

The Ministry of Environment in Lithuania has implemented a fishing ban on trout that will last until May 15th and on pike until May 31st. This decision is part of broader efforts to manage fish populations and ensure sustainable fishing practices within the country. Additionally, there are ongoing restrictions that prohibit fishing for pike using live bait, although exceptions are allowed in the Curonian Lagoon where fishermen can use chunks of fish for bait.

As part of these regulations, limited salmon and sea trout fishing is permitted on certain rivers until April 30th, provided the fisherman has the proper amateur fishing license. If salmon or sea trout are caught, a specific fishing card is required, and only one fish per fishing session is allowed, with a minimum size of 65 centimeters. Fishermen are also obligated to report any retained salmon or sea trout catches, ensuring that the regulations are adhered to and that sustainability goals can be monitored effectively.

These measures reflect Lithuania's commitment to preserving aquatic biodiversity and regulating fishing activities, especially as popular fishing seasons approach. By enforcing specific bans and quota systems, the Ministry aims to balance the interests of recreational anglers with critical environmental protection efforts, striving for a sustainable approach to the country's valuable fish resources.
