Jeong Geun-sik, the current Education Superintendent of Seoul, has announced his participation in a unification committee for progressive candidates in view of the upcoming education superintendent elections scheduled for June. According to a report by Hankyoreh, Jeong submitted his application to the 2026 Seoul Democratic Progressive Education Superintendent Candidate Unification Committee on the 27th of last month. He expressed his intention to participate in committee schedules even before his potential suspension from duties, which occurs upon registration as a preliminary candidate with the election commission.

On his social media, Jeong emphasized his commitment to adhering to the procedures and rules set forth by the unification committee and undergoing fair scrutiny based on policies and capabilities. He also assured that he will responsibly engage in discussions and policy agreements within the committee's timeline while fulfilling his duties as an education superintendent without negligence. The unification committee comprises various civic and educational organizations in Seoul, and several other potential candidates have registered to join the race, including former lawmakers and education officials.

In contrast, a separate unification group for conservative candidates has emerged, featuring notable figures including former public university presidents and district education officials willing to consolidate their candidacies for the education superintendent role. As the candidates prepare for a debate and eventual primary election, Jeong’s late registration has drawn criticism from rival candidates demanding his earlier commitment.
